Novak Djokovic Stuns Rafael Nadal at French Open
Djokovic Becomes Second Man to Defeat Nadal at Roland Garros
Nadal Loses Just Second Career Match at French Open
In a stunning upset, Novak Djokovic has dethroned five-time defending champion Rafael Nadal at the French Open. The Serbian star defeated Nadal in straight sets in the quarterfinals, becoming only the second player to beat Nadal at Roland Garros.
Nadal had been the overwhelming favorite to win a record-extending 10th French Open title. He had won 93 of his previous 95 matches at the tournament and had not lost at Roland Garros since 2009.
But Djokovic was simply too good on this day. He hit winners from all over the court and forced Nadal to make uncharacteristic errors. Djokovic won the first set 6-3, the second set 6-1, and the third set 6-2.
The victory was a major triumph for Djokovic, who is now a three-time French Open champion. It was also a disappointing end to Nadal's quest for a record-breaking 21st Grand Slam title.
